New paintings

We did monotype prints with stamping in class today for a change. It was fun, but not as fun as regular painting. Here is what i ended up with (we were given a still life to emulate).

Here is my most recent oil painting in the Afghanistan series:

I'm going to embarrass myself here, and you are going to divorce me as your sister, but...this is not my favorite.
I love the style and I think it is consistent with the other pieces. The little boy and his expression work very nicely as being part of the series, but that gun bothers me...and not in the way I think you intend it to. This strikes me as selling out at its most blatant. The artist is trying to inflict a message here...which...of course, you are, but with the other paintings the message was there without the coercion.
You were a very nice sister and I enjoyed our time together...I know you'll be looking for a new family now.

Oh, I liked the monochrome. It looked like fun. I can see how it might be easy to get carried away with that.

Is the oil painting finished?

ChrisB - Yes, I think it is finished - It is very stark isn't it?

min - Yes, these are fun you and Mom should do some together sometime - even the kids would probably enjoy them.

Min- No need for embarrassment - The problem is that you can't see the series together. (I have another one you will hate just as much that I'll be working on today.) The idea is to move from peaceful family people to the effects of war as the series progresses. I realize that people could feel this is a cheap shot (not so hahah) but it is a real picture that I found on the internet and I think it is the real problem - that kids grow up thinking that this is a normal state of existence. I want to show the people without guns, the people with guns and then the effects of the guns and bombs.

I did want to add that I wish I could see them all together. So far, all I can imagine is the violent one being the focal point, surrounded by the others. If you do more of these ridiculous ones maybe they'll fit in with the rest. I'll reserve judgement.

Oh...and as for it being a real picture, haven't you realized how biased the media always is?
